The Labyrinth of the Butterflies
Bilwi, Nicaragua
HOTEL LIWA MAIRIN
July 29, 2009
With the sound of the Caribbean sea in the background and the rhythm in the breeze of the palm trees that held the pupas (cocoons) of the scenery of the Labyrinth of the Butterflies, the light of the half moon in the clear tropical sky welcomed the audience to the show.
The scene was magical, with about 150 people from the community, and the hotel staff & guests, all of whom were mesmerized by the stories of Lucy, Mileva Maric, Molly, Bok Dong Kim, Rosa Parks and the Mayan weaver.
Some in the audience had returned for a second time for the show, having seen it the night before elsewhere in Bilwi. Once again, excitement and energy circulated through the diverse crowd of all ages, four ethnicities, and diverse professions. There were fisherwomen and men, lawyers, women’s rights activists, and journalists, among others. They resonated with the stories of the women in history as if they were part of themselves. Which they are!
