WINGS OF THE BUTTERFLY ANALYSIS PUBLISHED IN
DEVELOPMENT JOURNAL ISSUE ON THE POWER OF MOVEMENTS

Described as "an organic interactive process of artistic expression in movement-building," the Wings of the Butterfly project is is the focus of an article just published in a special issue of the journal Development, which is entitled, "Building Feminist Movement Through‘The Wings of the Butterfly’ Project (Alas de Mariposa)." Development is the flagship journal of the Society for International Development (SID)..

María Suárez Toro (Co coordinator of Wings of the Butterfly) and Margaret Thompson of the International Advisory Group and editor of the English web page of the project wrote the article about the contribution of the Wings project and its theatre show to movement building.

The journal issue entitled, "Power, movements, change," features reports on the AWID Forum on "The Power of Movements" based on the speeches and papers given at the meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, November 14-17, 2009.

Abstract of article:

María Suárez Toro and Margaret Thompson describe how the Wings of the Butterfly Project and 'The Labyrinth of the Butterflies' play are part of an organic interactive process of artistic expression in movement-building. It was written and produced in Spanish with a Costa Rican and MesoAmerican identity, but with a universal appeal in that it tells the stories of women in history from around the world who, in their life endeavours and in a variety of fields, have made significant contributions, and yet they and their work have been devalued, abused or otherwise rendered invisible.

The issue of the journal with Wendy Harcourt as its editor is a unique resource on the power of movements, a record of the knowledge, vision and efforts of the many participants in Cape Town that compliment the multimedia resources already available. The journal issue was sent to all 2,000 participants of the AWID Forum as well as to the 3,000 subscribers and 400 institutions of the journal.

The English language issue will be distributed by the London publisher Palgrave and will also be translated into Spanish and French. Versions of the special issue will be available in the three languages on the AWID website.
