WINGS OF THE BUTTERFLY: FIRST SEMESTER 2009         

"Labyrinth of the Butterflies" back on stage

An eight- day season of The Labiyrnth of the Butterfly in the Teatro La Aduana in Costa Rica will take place February 26 - March 8 – International Women´s Day. It is being sponsored by the Nobel Women´s Initiative, The National Theatre Company, the national Women's Institute (INAMU) and 39 organizations and institutions.

Workshops

• An experimental artistic workshop challenging ageism-sexism by honoring our cycles in life – a feminist workshop to bridge the generation gap in the feminist movement¨ will take place at La Quicona in the central highlands of Costa Rica on February 22, 2009. It is being organized by Wings of the Butterfly and the feminist group that is building a feminist sustainable community in La Quicona for feminists of all life cycles to discover though artistic expression how to go from sexist ageism into collaborative mirroring of each other in our life cycles.
  
  

• A similar workshop will take place at the XI Feminist Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encuentro, March 16- 20, 2009, in México City. The activity is being organized by Wings of the Butterfly together with the Central American Women´s Fund in which feminists from the region will address the issue of the generation gap from a feminist perspective regarding life cycles.
  
  

Tours of the show: Labyrinth of the Butterflies

• A Meso American Tour of the show will start in Mexico City during the XI Feminist Encuentro. Two shows will be presented on March 18 at the legendary Theatre El Claustro de Sor Juana in the historic section of the city. It is being sponsored by the Gender Program of the City Government and the Organizing Committee of the Encuentro. Presentations will follow in Antigua, Guatemala, May 14-16, sponsored by the Nobel Women´s Initiative for their Conference during those days, and then in Panama City at the end of July during the Sea Change Training School of Mesoamerican Just Associates and Petateras, where the show  will be sponsored by both organizations as part of their training school curriculum. Similar presentations are being planned for El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras during the second semester of 2009

• A national tour throughout rural Costa Rica will take place during 2009 starting on March 11 in the Caribbean province of Limón. Other presentations are currently being planned for Puntarenas province, Guanacaste, the Central Highlands in Los Santos and elsewhere.

Publication

Wings of the Butterfly has been invited to contribute to a special issue of the journal Development (www.sidint.org/development) which features reports on the AWID Forum on ‘The Power of Movements’ based on the speeches and papers given at the meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, November 14-17, 2009

María Suárez Toro (Co coordinator of Wings of the Butterfly) and Margaret Thompson of the International Advisory Group and editor of the English web page of the project are currently drafting the paper about the contribution of the project and its theatre show to movement building.
The issue of the journal under the edition of Wendy Harcourt will be a unique resource on the power of movements, a record of the knowledge, vision and efforts of the many participants in Cape Town that compliments the multimedia resources already available. The journal issue will go to all 2,000 participants of the Forum as well as to the 3,000 subscribers and 400 institutions of the journal.

The English language issue will be distributed by the London publisher Palgrave and will also be translated into Spanish and French. Versions of the special issue will be available in the three languages on the AWID website.
