The first Butterfliers are remarkable women we found during our artistic residency in Provincetown during the months of January and February, 2007:
- We met Almeda Segura, Eva Silva, Mary Jason, Bea Cabral and Frances Raymond through their pictures at the main dock in Provincetown. They are four elder Portuguese women. We learned that "they also faced the sea", which is the topic of the first song of the musical theatre show we are producing. "Our Lady of the Sea Change" by Guadalupe Urbina already incorporated them into the production. (February 5, 2007

"They Also Faced the Sea" - Art Installation by Ewa Nogiec and Norma Holt
We found out about 17 th century Maria Sibylla Merian , a Dutch artist turned botanist when she traveled alone as a woman artist to paint butterflies in Suriname . We heard about her from a friend, Edie Hartshorne, had listened to a radio program on KQED Community Radio in San Francisco, California, with Kim Todd who wrote a book about her. Edie called us in Provincetown to tell us the story (February 6, 2007)
We met and interviewed Nathalie Jacqueline Miebach, a sculptor from the USA who has combined the ancient art of basket weaving with astrology. When we saw her basket in an Exhibit in the Provincetown Arts Center, which is a navigation tool for the Antartic, we knew she had to be one of the butterfliers in our project (February 12, 2007). |
