WINGS OF THE
  BUTTERFLY
  THEATER

HISTORY

Background:
Wings of the Butterfly was the result of a proposal from Guadalupe Urbina, a Costa Rican singer and composer, made public during the second thesis presentation of Constanza Rangel and María Suárez Toro which took place in ALFORJA, San José, Costa Rica,  on December 11, 2005.

On this occasion, Guadalupe announced her proposal to create a musical theatre piece based on María's thesis, inviting the author to create a project that would take her book to the stage.

During their first meeting, María suggested broadening the perspective of the project so that it could encompass an effort to renew the feminist movement and of women integrating the population, investigation, comunication and connection with other initiatives.

As co-founder of the project, Guadalupe and María became co-coordinators of Wings of the Butterfly, summoning a group of feminists from different disciplines in Costa Rica to constitute an Advisory Group for the collective conceptualization and construction of the project around their original objectives, which were formed between 2006 and 2007. They also created an International Advisory Group to be able to internationalize both the project as well as the musical theatre show.

During the first 2 years, through the creation of operational teams and team work, the national group for Wings of the Butterfly developed the project design expressed as a double helix butterfly; they constructed a musical, its musicalization, script and multimedia; the work teams were created and hired; connections with regional and international organizations were made; they trained in paradigms and epistemology; the investigation was broadened;  media work was done in television, written press, internet and radio; a web page was created; development of the project was announced and disseminated publically via the media; financial resources were aquired and the administration of project.

By the end of 2007 Guadalupe resigned as co-coordinator and eventually from the project, making  Constanza Rangel the new co-coordinator, and the Advisory Group was transformed into the new “Growing Wings Collective” during the meeting of November 16 where the resignation was reviewed.

Purposes:
The purposes of “Wings of the Butterfly” are inscribed  in the processes and strategies of popularizing current historical knowledge, built from a feminist epistemology based on a variety of of women's knowledge and work. This was all integrated into the emerging Vital Paradigm perspective so that it could be used as a foundation to advance the resistence and tranformation that needs to be reactivated and revitalized in the world. From here we can create alternative political projects by using alternative paradigms.

Political Subject of the Project:
All women, from a feminist collective coordination of the project expressed through the Growing Wings Collective and their initiatives interacting with other similar initiatives.

Audience:
All women and men of the planet, including a diversity of ethnicities, nationalities, disabilities, sexual orientation, ages, etc.

Identity of the Project:
It is a project built in Costa Rica by a group of Latin American and Caribbean feminists to be shared with the world from its regional identity. The International Advisory Group assists in internationalizing the project.
